Gurp City

It's like Vegas fool. San Francisco and the Bay Area rappers, producers and DJs all get together for one good cause, to get drunk as fuck and make good music. Gurp City consists of hip hop pioneers such as DJ Quest and DJ Eddie Def to underground legends like Bored Stiff and Sacred Hoop to freestyle champions TopR and Conceit...pretty much every alcoholic rapper in the Bay Area of California. The Gurp Fam keeps growing and innovating rap music with artists like Trunk Drank, Z-Man, Fist Fam, Grand Invincible, Fay Dog, G-Pek, Eddie K, DJ Marz, Bullet Proof Space Travelers, Bullet Proof Scratch Hampsters, DJ Cue, Brandon B, Luke Sick, Iron Fist, Thuggy Fresh, 6 Feet Deep, DJ Mathew Africa, 4oneFunk, DJ Teeko, DJ Max Kane, DJ Mista-B, DJ B. Cause, DNAE Beats, Boac, The Makai, Third Sight, The AlterBoys, MC Oroville, Illsquad, Live Human, Lords Crew, Alex Pardee, Zero Friends, Big Sammy, DJ Raw B and Fatees.

MENACE MODE is the third album from underground hip hop duo GRAND INVINCIBLE, DJ Eons One and MC Luke Sick. Released on cassette three years after their 2012 CD EP, Winter365. The album contains a notably mustier and grimmer sound than their previous efforts. Guest appearances, in the form of furious scratch attacks, came from Sneek, Netherlands’ DJ Sniper (on the song SOFT DUCKS) and Oroville, California’s Eddie Def (on the song PLAN A). The first single and video is YEGG. Other singles with videos to follow are: CODENAMES PT. II, JACKSON POLLOCK, SHOWDOWN (Interlude), BRAINS DECORATE, and PLAY MY TAPE.

Luke Sick, who shared the mic with numerous features on their previous EP, goes all bolo on this one similar in fashion to their first 2 LPs (ASK THE DUST and COLD HAND IN THE DICE GAME). Producer Eons composed all of the vinyl excavations and dusted drum patterning and handled the rest of the album’s cut-work himself. Due to the fusty nature of their record company Megakut’s “micro-release” credenda, some of GRAND INVINCIBLE’s previous work is now hard to find.

GRAND INVINCIBLE – “Winter 365 b/w Dead The Situation” 7″ Out Now!

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

The westbays illest rap group is back with a new 2 song 7″ on the legendary 625 Thrash label.
Here is the press release:

Group: Grand Invincible
Release: Winter 365 b/w Dead the Situation 7″
Format: orange-vinyl, 45 rpm, limited to 300

West Bay hardcore rap’s grandmaster grimies, DJ Eons One and Luke Sick (Grand Invincible), have teamed with SF’s illest MCs (Agentstriknine, Eddie K, and Z-Man) to release the 7” Winter365 b/w Dead The Situation, coming Dec 2011/Jan 2012 on 625Thrash. A pre-cursor to their upcoming releases, Winter365 EP and Dust Cigar: The Gurple Tape (both due out in early 2012), the 7” is two songs of raw rhymes, heavy drums and gritty, cue-burn adorned samples with the b-side track featuring guest verses from the aforementioned artists.

Grand Invincible gained secret infamy and invisible acclaim from the cutty-est and most crucial critical heads with their 2009 debut self-release Ask the Dust as well as their 2010 release Cold Hand in the Dice Game thru Alex Pardee’s Zerofriends collective. Since then the two man crew has been record digging and rhyme-writing like a couple of late night hypes on a serious jag, diligently pursuing the hardcore hip-hop ethos to the best of their ability while also coveting a uniquely identifiable style. Spending much of their time in the thrifts, the dive bar live venues and the lab, Grand Invincible has fostered a productive collaborative relationship with other likeminded artists on the Bay Area DIY scene, and it seemed only fitting to bring it all together for this release.

The 2-track 7” will be pressed on orange-vinyl with original cover art by Michael A. Freeman and be available thru Ebullition distro ( in late Dec 2011. The first pressing is limited to 300, on virgin vinyl at 45 rpm. Immediately following this release, both these tracks will be available for digital download as part of the entire Winter365 EP thru a yet-to-be-named digital provider. Winter365 7” is just an appetizer for more than a couple main courses to be served up by GI throughout 2012.

What are you waiting for…..

Origins of Gurp #3 – The Disturbers “Anansi Spider”

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Sorry for lagging on this series things have been hectic between being a new parent, work, and life in general. Anyway, this time around I am focusing on the first release by Luke Sick’s side project The Disturbers entitled “Anansi Spider”. I ordered this tape from the ATAK catalog seeing it listed as a Luke Sick solo endeavor. At the time I was listening to the first three Sacred Hoop releases constantly and had to have it.
It quickly went into heavy rotation and led me to becoming friends with Luke after yelling Dirt Town continuosly during a performance at Maritime Hall for Cues record release party.  After which we smoked weed on P-Minus’ roof. The album itself is exactly what it is billed as, a punk rock mc’s four track practice tape. Some of these songs you may recognize. “Crampin ya Action” was reworked for Sacred Hoop’s Go Hogwild album, “Saddness” morphed into “DSL” from Sleepover, and “Gillian” has gotten a new life on Grand Invincible’s latest album Cold Hand In the Dice Game. Here you get to hear them in raw form with different production. Other favorites of mine are “Small Axe” a duet with Bob Marley, “Deadicated” with Z-MAN, and “Battery Chuckers” which became a staple in the Hoop’s live show.

Tape rip courtesy of the man himself, Luke Sick, enjoy and spread it around.
