Gurp City

It's like Vegas fool. San Francisco and the Bay Area rappers, producers and DJs all get together for one good cause, to get drunk as fuck and make good music. Gurp City consists of hip hop pioneers such as DJ Quest and DJ Eddie Def to underground legends like Bored Stiff and Sacred Hoop to freestyle champions TopR and Conceit...pretty much every alcoholic rapper in the Bay Area of California. The Gurp Fam keeps growing and innovating rap music with artists like Trunk Drank, Z-Man, Fist Fam, Grand Invincible, Fay Dog, G-Pek, Eddie K, DJ Marz, Bullet Proof Space Travelers, Bullet Proof Scratch Hampsters, DJ Cue, Brandon B, Luke Sick, Iron Fist, Thuggy Fresh, 6 Feet Deep, DJ Mathew Africa, 4oneFunk, DJ Teeko, DJ Max Kane, DJ Mista-B, DJ B. Cause, DNAE Beats, Boac, The Makai, Third Sight, The AlterBoys, MC Oroville, Illsquad, Live Human, Lords Crew, Alex Pardee, Zero Friends, Big Sammy, DJ Raw B and Fatees.

Guest T.G.I.F. Boss, Lydia Popovich:

Another Friday night in Gurp City means it’s time as MC Oroville would say, to “Do SoMETHing!”

Here’s some ideas on shit to get into.

Wale, Catchdubs, Trackademicks and The Instant Messengers // Mighty 9PM // 119 Utah SF $15

Wale and the homie Trackademicks are doing some shit at Mighty with Catchdubs and Brandon B’s favorites The Instant Messengers, whose pants incidently are tighter than yours. A lot of folks are feelin’ Wale, I’m not really up on game but Gurp City’s own Lord Facials is. He interviewed dude not to long ago for Vapors. That shit’s online and can be accessed here. Trackademicks is the homie and his Honor Roll crew really know how to have a good time so grab your neon track jackets and lace up those limited edition alligator dunks and get down there.

Wesley Willi’s Joy Rides // Artist’s Television Access 7 & 9:15PM // 992 Valencia SF $8

Wesley Willis (RIP) is one of the most fascinating people to have ever graced this earth. This documentary explores his life, his music, his art and the demon hell rides that he took him from obscurity to fame. Rock over London, Rock on Chicago. If you ain’t knowin’ I suggest you start your introduction by YouTubin’ his now infamous interview with Howard Stern.

Funkside Toph One with special guest Z-Man /// Nickies 466 Haight SF Free before 11pm or $5 after

It goes down every Saturday, tomorrow it’s True Justice featuring ya boy Z-Dazzle on the mic. Thuggy Fresh would be there but his seester is getting married so he asks that you,”quadruple fist miller high-lifes, smell your keys in the bathroom and point a finger in the sky for me.”

Noise Pop Expo & Noise Pop Showcases // Various venues all over SF

Every year around this time Noise Pop takes over venues across SF and fills them with indie rock loving hipsters. There is a wide variety of folks playing this year. Peep the schedule and take your significant other to a non-rap show for once. NP is putting on a few free to the public “expo” events this year including an educational seminar and a bazaar of sorts both at 12 Galaxies. Tomorrow is the educational seminar. Yours truly will be on a panel talking about how to use the interweb to market and propel your musical careers. Come heckle me. Sunday DJ Ryan Poulsen will be spinning the cuts for the masses who show up for Pop & Shop, the fashion and craft bazaar.

I’ve got no other suggestions for Sunday, I’ll be busy putting together a video of the footage I took last weekend when I caught SergDun reenacting this video down at the local YWCA.

Stuff to do in SF this weekend

Posted by Thuggy

DJ Stef here. About to be “livin’ it up, livin’ it up, oh yeah, Friday night.” Unfortunately I can’t sing “Friday night, just got paid.” Cuz I didn’t get paid. ANYwayz here are a few jawns going on in the SF city.

TONIGHT:

- Fishbone at the Independent! You’ll see the Funky Biznatch and me there. If you know me, you know I am ancient. I must have seen Fishbone at least 10 times in the 80s, including when they opened for the Beastie Boys’ Licensed to Ill tour 21 years ago this month. I haven’t seen them since like ’92 so I am super stoked.

-  Bomb Hip-Hop presents COLLECTOR @ Space Gallery. This is the 2nd annual exhibit of classic hip-hop record covers and other hip-hop memorabilia. Last year’s was great. Classic hip-hop cuts were played all night. Serg drank Canadian beer and got confused. Open from 7 pm to 1 am. It’s FREE! Distortion 2 Static caught some of the action last year:

Â

TOMORROW, Saturday 2/23

- Tomorrow is the LAST Rucker Park show on KFJC. Mike Boo, Eddie K, Serg and I (and more) are going down to kick it with Trinity and to thank her for her always-awesome show and for supporting and promoting artists and DJs over the years. Listen and watch at kfjc.org or on 89.7FM, noon to 3:00 pm.

- 4OneFunk presents That’s the Blap at the Elbo Room. Kick it with Azeem, Dnae Beats, Conman, B.Cause and more. And probably, Chauncey. $7 before 11:00.

- Pete Rock, J-Billion and Fluokids at Mezzanine. I want to see the French Pharrell. Oui.

-Patric Fallon’s 25th birthday party at 222. Patric is in All Teeth and Knuckles and Futuristic Prince. He used to work with Serg at Hollywood Video. He’s cool.

- Funkside at Nickie’s with Toph One. Toph holds it down on Haight Street every Saturday night. DJ Raw B is the guest this week. I’ll be DJing there on March 8, celebrating my 46th(!) birthday. Hope to see some of you there.

Have fun! Cheers.

The 40 Oz Show: 02.22.08… Fuck The Oscars

Posted by Max

Listen to The 40 Oz Show, bitches.

I’ve been out the loop (more so than usual) lately, so the show’s been slippin’. Thanks to White Paul and TopR for the shine on the Gurp Board. I’ll try to get back into the every-other-week regimen as best I can.

First of all, since this is the first show I’ve done in 2008, Happy New Year.

This week’s comeback show (but don’t call it that) coincides with the Oscars, so I decided to put together a Fuck The Oscars show. Just a few of my favorite joints from movie soundtracks. Enjoy. I’ll be back in two weeks.

  • Ice Cube, “How To Survive In South Central,” Boyz N The Hood (Warner Bros)
  • Too $hort, “Only The Strong Will Survive,” Menace II Society (Jive)
  • A Tribe Called Quest, “Glamour And Glitz,” The Show (Def Jam)
  • Cypress Hill & Sonic Youth, “I Love You Mary Jane,” Judgement Night (Sony)
  • Ice-T, “Colors,” Colors (Warner Bros.)
  • Notorious B.I.G., “Party And Bullshit,” Who’s The Man? (MCA)
  • Geto Boys, “Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangster,” Office Space (Interscope)
  • Schoolly-D, “Am I Black Enough For You?” King OF New York (Jive)
  • Ice-T & Ice Cube, “Trespass,” Trespass (Warner Bros.)
  • Public Enemy, “Fight The Power,” Do The Right Thing (Motown)
  • LL Cool J, “Going Back To Cali,” Less Than Zero (Def Jam)
  • EA-Ski, “Blast If I Have To,” Friday (Priority)
  • Son Of Bazerk, “What Could Be Better Bitch,” Juice (MCA)
  • TopR, “DWA,” Piece By Piece (Burning The Candle at Both Ends / e-Lings)
  • Ice-T, “New Jack Hustler (Nino’s Theme),” New Jack City (Giant)

Doin’ a show? Got a request or a dedication? Hit me up and let me know, and I’ll get the word out on The 40 Oz Show.

T.G.I.F’n.Friday! by Luke Sick

Posted by Thuggy

The weekend has actually begun! The next gurp that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding pints…Let it come. I repeat, Relly, Let it come…Are jobs so dear or pussy so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of convention and sobriety? Forbid it, Almighty drunken liberty! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me Gurp City or give me death!

Start your Friday night by honing your freestyle technique to this grimey new Vrse Murphy beat. My boy’s back in the saddle.

Vrse Murphy – Mozart Wind
Then go check out X-Clan at the Mezzanine. And hope to death that Brother J plays some Dark Sun Riders tracks, because that shit was more slept on than a couch on a porch in Chico. Hit up Lydia for the guestlist, ’cause Lifesavas is on the bill as well.

TopR Gives Thanks to the Gurpo Nation

Posted by Thuggy

topr and quest at marathon releaseÂ

TopR writes…

I would like to thank all the Gurpos and Gurpettes for helping make the show this last Friday the most satisfying and successful performance of my long and alcohol drenched career. All the opening acts killed and the crowd response was gracious to the point of being almost over whelming. As I watched Conceit and BOAC’s set from the balcony, enhaling blunt smoke from the stoners below and witnessed the boozed up crowd going absolutely bananas during they’re set, I realized that I could not ask for a more supportive group of fans and friends. As we took the stage and the throngs of gurped out hip hop aficionados pushed forward to the stage, I felt like all these years of hard work is finally beginning to pay off. I’m about to head down to the 2B1 warehouse in the Mission to go over footage from the performance which will eventually become the DVD half of the double DVD/CD that will be the official release of The Marathon of Shame. We have national distro on this one, and i think I’m finally ready to jump into the national spotlight. Once again, I would like to thank all of you for making it happen. I said it at the end of the show, and I mean this whole heartedly, Gurp City is the best crew in hip hop right now and its about time we let the world know. 2008 is our year. Here’s to you.

Check out TopR performing “Security! Security!” at the  12 Galaxies this past weekend.

THE LAST THREE SONGS OFF GRAND INVINCIBLE’S DEBUT SMASH: “ASK THE DUST”

Posted by Thuggy

gicomic11.jpg

Grand Invincible “TIME TO GET GUCCI”
[mp3]http://gurpcity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/11-time-to-get-gucci.mp3[/mp3]
Many gurpos will think that this song is all about Schoolly D, but actually the rap was inspired by the tongue-in-cheek pimpiness of Miami’s Gucci Crew and cats like Gigolo Tony– a b-boy Kerouacian stream of conscious about bein’ stewy and introspective in the club when everybody else is there to dance and schmooze. The baseline with the horns that Eons swiped for the chorus reminds me of that “Crazy Boys” song from the musical Westside Story. Fuck Officer Krupke!
If anybody can tell me the title of the 2 Live Crew song that I ripped off for the flow of these last two songs, I’ll buy you a barely pop at the show (Topr’s excluded from the contest, ’cause he already called me out on it and I always buy him drinks anyway, the couch-surfing, hippie-hating bum that he is).

gicomic12.jpg

Grand Invincible “DENNIS RICHMOND”
[mp3]http://gurpcity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/12-dennis-richmond.mp3[/mp3]
Dennis Richmond is about delivering the rap news where the top story is almost always an indepth report on the demolition of a duck emcee. And yes, that is Baby Huey on the intro.

gicomic13.jpg

Grand Invincible “LISA”
[mp3]http://gurpcity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/13-lisa.mp3[/mp3]
Every Grand Invincible album has a song titled with a girl’s name (kinda like EPMD’s Jane saga, but about different chicks each time not just one). Ask The Dust’s is called Lisa… her brother was a greaser.

And that’s it! You’ve heard the whole album, now come to the show!

Grand Invincible “MEGABLAST”
[mp3]http://gurpcity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/08-megablast.mp3[/mp3]
I used to know a girl who would hit Richard Pryor’s chalice, grab me by the ears, and say in a gravel voice, holding back her exhale, “Shotgun this megablast, bitch,” and then blow a full-on horizontal mushroom cloud of burnt-styrofoam flavored smoke directly in my face. It was a pretty heavy thing to experience and I’ve never been able to shake it from my memory. Also, this song is Cali’s answer to Chill Rob G’s “Wildpitch.” Compare the two you’ll find vast similarities. Dan came sick with the 45 King-ish (not to be mistaken by Pete Rock-ish or T-ray-ish) horns at the end, don’tcha think?

gicomic9pdf.jpg
Grand Invincible “ELEPHANT TRANQ”
[mp3]http://gurpcity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/09-elephant-tranq.mp3[/mp3]
I think it was DJ Eons homey Jake who found this record in the street and gave it to him. Lo and behold from someone else’s trash came this amazing break. The perfect theme for the Year of the Rat “and that’s twelve whole months of the/ hardest G’s alive hidin’ under their comforters.” (Do you recognize the nod to AZ pioneers Supermarket in that lyric? If you don’t, get Brandon B from Trunk Drank to put you up on game at the show on Sunday, this Sunday, Jan. 20th).

gicomic10pdf.jpg
Grand Invincible “WAR MEMORIAL”
[mp3]http://gurpcity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/10-war-memorial.mp3[/mp3]
This next one isn’t necessarily about the current war, it’s more a comment on all wars and conquering people. I was inspired by Killah Priest (of course, Eons dubbed out Wildstyle samples, especially the baby cooing, got me in the mood, reminded me of that remix that GZA did for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with KP on it) and the war poems of Alan Dugan (here’s one so you get the idea; it’s called How We Heard the Name, enjoy:)

The river brought down
dead horses, dead men
and military debris,
indicative of war
or official acts upstream,
but it went by, it all
goes by, that is the thing
about the river. Then
a soldier on a log
went by. He seemed drunk
and we asked him Why
had he and this junk
come down to us so
from the past upstream.
”Friends,” he said, ”the great
Battle of Granicus
has just been won
by all of the Greeks except
the Lacedaemonians and
myself: this is a joke
between me and a man
named Alexander, whom
all of you ba-bas
will hear of as a god.”

Grand Invincible ‘NORTH ROUTE’
[mp3]http://gurpcity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/05-north-route.mp3[/mp3]
Yo man, we chillin’ this funky fresh jam. I wanna tell you a little somethin’ about us. We’re the Grand Invincible Productions crew and due to the fact that no-one else out there knew what time it was, we have to tell you a little story about where we come from…

gicomic5.jpg

Grand Invincible “THE STYLE IS BONKERS”
[mp3]http://gurpcity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/06-the-style-is-bonkers.mp3[/mp3]
Conceit left a comment on our myspace saying that this was his theme music forever (peep it: myspace.com/grandinvincible). Grimey time!
gicomic6f.jpg

Grand Invincible “GOLD WITH CURSIVE”
[mp3]http://gurpcity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/07-gold-with-the-cursive.mp3[/mp3]
This is a totally necessary throwdown about drinking original Coors and comin’ fresh on the mic. Can you name the two rappers that Eons cuts up at the end?
gicomic7.jpg

Stay tuned gurpos, three more are coming tomorrow and then three more after that. Then, come to the show and celebrate Luke Sick, Heathakilla, Raw B’s birthdays. Say word.
