Its Going Down in RENO THIS SAT!!!

Monday, June 18th, 2007

If theres any possibility for you to hit Reno NV this Saturday I highly recommend that you make it out to the The Tortoise Rising Show Being put on by the big homie Stacks Malone. G Pek met up with Stacks a while back and the two have been plottin big thangs for Reno area gurpers in the near future. Fist off this Sat at the Record Street Cafe Stacks is having an art opening where he’s going to be selling tons of dope art along side the beat backdrops of DJ’s G-Pek, Caserock and Borg One. As for the Hip Hop portion of the night Hiero’s Opio is a sure shot to put on a dope show but with Gurp City’s finest slated to open, our boys just might steal the show. Z-Man, G-Pek, Luke Sick and TopR will be in full effect so bring your girlfriends and leave the handcuffs at home. Odds are on Luke Sick to lose the farm at the roulette table around 4:30am. For more information about the show hit up Stacks Malone at his myspace page.

The 40 Oz Show: 06.06.07…THE SUMMER JAMS SHOW

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

Listen to The 40 Oz Show, bitches!

Here it is — The SUMMER JAMS edition of The 40 Oz Show for the first full week of June, a little something to get you in the summer mood.

For the record, this show was not as easy to put together as I had initially thought. There were three basic rules to determining what constitutes a summer jam:

  • the song or album had to have been released sometime in June, July or August

  • the song or album title had to have the word “summer” in it

  • the song had to be obviously, unmistakably about the summer

On top of that, the song had to have some resonance as a summer jam, something in the sound of the music that harkens to summer, and/or some history as a “classic” summer jam; there are plenty of songs that came out during the summer or have “summer” in the title that still aren’t the least bit summer-y.

Ultimately, I realized how subjective all this can be. I also realized that there are some great summer mixes out there on the internet — way better than this one — so I tried not to take it too seriously and just have fun with it.

In the end, for better or worse, here’s The 40 Oz Show’s Summer Jams Edition. Enjoy it with your favorite cold beverage…

  • Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, “Summertime,” Homebase (Jive)
  • UGK, “The Game Belongs To Me,” Underground Kingz (Jive)
  • 213, “Another Summer,” The Hard Way (TVT)
  • Trick Daddy, “In Da Wind” feat. Cee-Lo & Big Boi, Thug Holiday (Atlantic)
  • Pigeon John, “I Lost My Job Again,” …And The Summertime Pool Party (Quannum)
  • Federation, “18 Dummy,” 12″ (Reprise)
  • Ice Cube, “My Summer Vacation,” Death Certificate (Priority)
  • E-40, “Carlos Rossi,” Federal (Sick Wid It)
  • Beyonce, “Summertime” Remix feat. Ghostface Killah, 12″ (Sony)
  • Clipse, “When The last Time,” Lord Willin’ (Star Trak)
  • Turk Talk, “Bring The Base Back,” West Coast Vaccine (The Cure) (Sick Wid It)
  • Jay-Z, “Brooklyn’s Finest” feat. The Notorious B.I.G., Reasonable Doubt (EMI)
  • JT Tha Bigga Figga, “Zeniths In The Summertime,” Puttin’ It On The Map (SMC)
  • Mos Def & Esthero, “Summer Time,” DJ Revolution & Total Eclipse: Draft Radio Vol. 1 (Draft)

Cohen’s art at First Amendment

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Cohen vs. Shepard Fairey

One of Gurp City’s finest artists, Aye Jay has been grooming a protoge for the past 6 years. His son Cohen has been collaborating with well known artists for a minute. His pieces were revealed at his first art show a few weeks ago in Chico, CA at Crux Gallery. Next up for 6 year old Cohen is his first visit to Minneapolis, Minnesota with his dad to open his next showing at First Amendment Arts gallery June 16th and 17th.

First Amendment Arts is proud to present “Dessert,” the collaborative art of
6-year-old Cohen Morano.Much like the title of the show, the art has no
grand illusions to be anything but a sweet feast, but for the
eyes rather than the taste buds. When asked about why he named the show as
such, he simply replied,“Dessert is really good.”

From the age of two (with a little help from dad, Gangsta Rap Coloring Book
artist Aye Jay), Cohen’s watercolor paintings have traveled the globe to a
“Who’s who” of modern art, spanning graffitists, fine artists, printmakers,
tattoo artists, as well as clothing and toy designers. Once in the artists’
possession, they have carte blanche to do whatever they wish to one of
Cohen’s watercolors before shipping it back to eager little hands.

What has come back has been nothing short of stunning, from Barry McGee’s
intricate pen work, Shepard Fairey’s iconic stencils, Chris Ware’s animals
on parade, to Mark Ryden’s interpretive use of negative space. With the
number of pieces now well over one hundred, artist Jack Davis (of Mad
magazine fame) called Cohen “another Ralph Steadman.” Other artists involved
in the show include Juxtapoz regulars Bigfoot, Kaws, and Gary Taxali, Ego
Trip’s Brent Rollins, rappers Rammelzee and Z-Man, gig poster giants Art
Chantry and Frank Kozik, and Burlesque’s own Aaron Horkey, Todd Bratrud, and
Mike Davis. While these collaborative pieces will not be for sale, this is a
very rare opportunity for Twin Cities art enthusiasts to come see work from
all of these artists in the same place at the same time.
